Rain could hamper meteor shower viewing

Rain expected to move in early Tuesday could make viewing the Perseid Meteor Shower difficult.

The source of the shower is Comet Swift-Tuttle, which is currently located beyond the orbit of Uranus. The comet dust reaches as far as Earth allowing the flimsy specks of dust to create vivid streaks of light as the disintegrate in the Earth's atmosphere.

The meteor shower could include up to 50 "shooting stars" an hour at peak time Tuesday morning.

Sunny skies ahead

A blooming field of sunflowers east of town signals several days of beautiful weather in the forecast. The National Weather Service is calling for sun through Sunday. Temperatures should hold steady around 80 degrees, making it a great week to get outdoors.



Funnel cloud spurs tornado warning

At 7:30 a.m., a trained spotter reported a funnel cloud between Litchfield and Grove City, moving east at 44 MPH. A tornado warning has been issued for southeastern Kandiyohi County, southern Meeker County and northwestern McLeod County until 8:15 a.m.

Rain storm leaves minor damage

A heavy band of rain pushed through Litchfield around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. The storm broke this branch outside Center National Bank, as well as pulled down several power and light poles, according to the Meeker County Sheriff's Office. The strongest storms swept through the northern part of the county.

Strong storms could likely rumble through late this afternoon (Friday) into early evening, according to the National Weather Service. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds.



Trees, power lines downed in Saturday storm

A Saturday evening thunderstorm blew down trees and powers lines across the county Saturday.

Meeker County experienced strong winds, heavy rains, and dime- to nickel-sized hail, according to the Meeker County Sheriff's Office. The office received reports of power lines down, trees up rooted, and buildings damaged in the Grove City and Dassel areas. There were no reports of injuries or homes damaged.

According to the Sheriff's Office, there were reports of funnel clouds in the Grove City area. There were no confirmed reports of tornado touchdowns.


Spring storm sends vehicles skidding

Meeker County Sheriff deputies responded to a number of reports of vehicles in county ditches Saturday morning as approximately 4 inches of snow fell in Litchfield over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

At least seven cars were reported in the ditch, as well as two one-vehicle rollovers. No injuries were reported with any of the accidents.

This week is Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week, and the National Weather Service-Twin Cities has designated a daily topic each day of the week. Thursday’s topic is tornadoes.

A statewide tornado drill is planned for 1:45 p.m. to allow schools, businesses and hospitals a chance to practice their tornado procedures. A second drill at 6:55 p.m. will allow families and second-shift workers to practice sheltering plans.
