SportsBoys tennis team seeded third in Section 5AMay 13, 2008 - 9:16pm — Lyle DiekmannThe Litchfield boys tennis team will be the No. 3 seed in the Section 5A Tournament, which gets under way at 4 p.m. May 15. Litchfield will play No. 6 Fridley at Litchfield High School. Other first-round matchups includ No. 8 Minneapolis North at No. 1 Breck, No. 5 Brooklyn Center at No. 4 Becker, and No. 7 Columbia Heights at No. 2 Providence Academy. The section semifinals are slated for 4 p.m. May 19. The finals will be played at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Minnesota Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis. Girls win Wright County golf titleMay 13, 2008 - 9:11pm — Lyle DiekmannA pair of third-place finishes at the Wright County Conference finale May 12 at Timber Creek Golf Club were good enough for the Litchfield girls golf team to win the league title. Litchfield finished the season with 1,879 strokes, while second-place Waconia was 43 strokes back. Delano, Mound-Westonka, Orono, Annandale, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Dassel-Cokato and Watertown-Mayer rounded out the standings. Mound-Westonka's Amy Miller was the top individual scorer in the WCC. Kristen Solbrack, Katlyn Kiehn, Kayla Sommerfeld and Karin Hansen were all-conference for the Dragons. Softball pairings set in 5A-WestMay 12, 2008 - 5:00pm — Lyle DiekmannSeeding for the Section 5A-West girls softball tournament is set, with Eden Valley-Watkins the No. 10 seed and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City the No. 5 seed. EV-W will play at No. 7 Kimball at 4:30 p.m. May 15. The winner of that game will play at No. 2 Osakis at 5 p.m. May 16. ACGC will play at at No. 4 Browerville at 5 p.m. May 16. Blues 1-1 over weekendMay 12, 2008 - 11:47am — Lyle DiekmannThe Litchfield Blues split a pair of weekend games, winning 7-4 Friday over Pearl Lake and losing 5-2 to Sauk Rapids-Jimmy's on Sunday. Terry Euerle had three hits and pitched three innings in relief during Friday's win. David Pennertz had two of the Blues' six hits Sunday. Litchfield is 1-2 overall. Veto, Lecher athletes of the yearMay 8, 2008 - 4:43pm — Lyle DiekmannSeniors Emily Veto and Jordan Lecher were named the winners of the Student Athlete Awards during the LHS Senior Athletic Banquet May 7 at the Church of St. Philip. Molly Hansvick and Taylor Berry were the recipients of the Student Scholar Athlete Awards. Nominees for the Student Athlete Awards must be 3-sport letterwinners during their senior year. Student Scholar Athlete Award finalists must letter in two sports and sport a GPA of 3.5 or higher. This year's Distinguished Service Award went to Randy Quitney. Tennis team notches first winMay 6, 2008 - 4:00pm — Lyle DiekmannThe Litchfield boys tennis team picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Becker 6-1 May 5 at Litchfield High School. Andy Stoeckler, Dominic Devine and Zach Hedtke were winners in singles action. Aaron Carlson and Taylor Berry, Zach Fredman and Brennan Rosenow, and Nik Hendrickson and Nate Adams made it a clean sweep in doubles. Litchfield is 1-8 overall this season. Dragons extend WCC golf leadMay 5, 2008 - 1:07pm — Lyle DiekmannLitchfield shot a season-low 171 to win a Wright County Conference meet May 1 at Albion Ridges Golf Club. Kalli Swanson fired a 41 for the Dragons, who won the meet by 11 shots over Waconia. Litchfield leads Waconia by 37 strokes through six conference meets. Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Kelcie Eggersgluess was the meet’s medalist with a 40. Blues loses season openerMay 5, 2008 - 11:41am — Lyle DiekmannDrew Vanloy and Scott Geiger limited Litchfield to three hits as St. Cloud Ortho defeated the Litchfield Blues 2-0 in amateur baseball action May 4 at Optimist Park in Litchfield. Joe Buschette, Toby Chellin and Gabe Lecher collected hits for the Blues (0-1). Travis Johnson started on the mound and pitched four shutout innings. Jon Euerle took the loss in relief. The game, which was originally scheduled to be played in St. Cloud, was moved to Litchfield because of a college baseball tournament. Carlson drafted by Seattle SeahawksApril 26, 2008 - 6:09pm — Lyle DiekmannLitchfield's John Carlson was selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the seventh pick of the second round during the NFL Draft April 26 at Radio City Music Hall in New York. Carlson, a tight end from Notre Dame, was the 38th player taken overall and the second tight end selected. |
