Supporters of a municipal swimming pool will make their second appearance before the Litchfield City Council tonight.
The group appeared before the City Council in October asking for the city's financial support in pursuing a feasibility study for a pool. The Council voted 6-0 to foot the $10,000 cost of such a study. Tonight, the study's findings will be on display.
The swimming pool effort is nothing new. The current group of supporters includes a couple of members — Sue Fenton and Dr. Cecil Leitch — from a similar push for a municipal pool in 1987. The group formed two decades ago collected 700 signatures on a petition that forced the issue onto a special referendum ballot in July 1987, but despite what supporters believed was widespread support the effort was defeated.
Though the City Council voted unanimously to fund a feasibility study, most members expressed reservations about the city building a swimming pool at this time.
"When I was running for office, one of the major things that was asked from my ward was, 'How can we get a swimming pool,'" Ward 2 council member Connie Lies said in October. "Unfortunately, on the other side, we need some really big things that are important to the safety and security of the community."
Among the other projects that would take precedence over a swimming pool, Lies said, were a rescue hall, expanded fire hall and new water tower.
