The right snack for children should be light, yet filling enough to temporary satisfy hunger pains. It’s important to choose snacks that promote a healthy diet: low-fat, with whole grains, vitamins and calcium.
Here are a few snack items that your child can prepare alone or with minimal assistance:
* Air-popped popcorn: 3 cups contains about 93 calories (with less than 1.5 grams of fat), 3.5 grams of fiber, and are considered a whole-grain food item.
* Fruit and vegetables: Fresh fruit is a great way to boost vitamins in the diet, and is a great fast-finger food.
* Don’t forget that raw vegetables are also a low-fat and crispy treat. Try celery with peanut butter or broccoli, or cauliflower, cucumbers or zucchini with low-fat dressing.
* Additional low-fat snack items include whole grain granola bars, whole grain crackers, or quick breads such as pumpkin or banana bread.
* Snacks can be fun and nutritious. Choosing the right snack for you and your family can promote a healthy diet.
