Severe Weather Week: Tornado Drill Day

» Read similar stories filed under:

This week is Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week, and the National Weather Service-Twin Cities has designated a daily topic each day of the week. Thursday’s topic is tornadoes.

A statewide tornado drill is planned for 1:45 p.m. to allow schools, businesses and hospitals a chance to practice their tornado procedures. A second drill at 6:55 p.m. will allow families and second-shift workers to practice sheltering plans.

  • In 2007, there were 18 tornadoes in Minnesota — the lowest total since 1990. The two strongest tornadoes were rated F-2, near Pelican Rapids and Eldred.
  • Tornadoes are measured by their estimated wind speed and damage on the Enhanced Fujita scale from F0 (weakest) to F5 (strongest).
