Severe Weather Week: Heat waves

» Read similar stories filed under:

This week is Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week, and the National Weather Service-Twin Cities has designated a daily topic each day of the week. Friday’s topic is heat waves.

  • Since 1993, 14 people have died in Minnesota from excessive heat and humidity, making heat and humidity our second-deadliest weather events, after floods.
  • The Heat Index measures how hot it feels when relative humidity is added to the air temperature. Heat Index values were devised for shady conditions with light wind; exposure to full sunshine can increase values by up to 15 degrees.
  • Heat disorders, like exhaustion and stroke, can occur when the body loses its ability to shed heat through circulation and sweating. Heat-related illnesses may develop when the body cannot compensate for loss through perspiration and the core body temperature rises.
