114 YEARS AGO: NEWS FROM THE ISSUE OF DECEMBER 15, 1883

Just as we were ready to go to press last Saturday, we received a telegram from Grove City stating that great excitement prevailed in that usually quiet town on account of a street brawl the night before in which about fifteen people took part. The row commenced about midnight and was caused by the fact that some in the party had indulged freely in “fire water.” From an eye witness we learn that the weapons used were wagon box end boards, whips, fists and other dangerous weapons. Our informant says that it was a free-for-all fight in which about fifteen persons took part and at one time during the battle two persons were knocked out and were lying in the street. He says he did not venture near the battleground for fear that some in the crowd had revolvers and contented himself with keeping out of sight. Some of the crowd were hurt but none real seriously. One of the participants was arrested but was able to convince a jury of his innocence. We understand the people of Grove City are very upset with those involved.
