FBI, county mum on possible investigation

Meeker County and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials offered little comment Monday regarding reports of an investigation involving the county.

County Attorney Stephanie Beckman told the Independent Review in a telephone interview that she would have no comment other than a written press release, which she sent late Monday afternoon. In it, Beckman said only, “The County's official response to all questions about a federal investigation should be directed to the investigating agency, the FBI, as the county is not at liberty to comment at this time.”

County Administrator Paul Virnig, reached at his office Monday afternoon, said he could not comment at all on what may or may not be happening and directed all questions to Beckman.

Reports of eight to 10 FBI investigators visiting the Meeker County Courthouse and Meeker County Law Enforcement Center surfaced last week.

Litchfield Police Chief Pat Fank, whose department is located in the law enforcement center along with the Meeker County Sheriff's Office, said Tuesday that FBI investigators interviewed some of his officers but that he did not know what the investigation was about.

“I don’t have a lot, mainly because the only thing I can do is speculate and guess, and I don’t want to do that,” Fank said. “Several of my officers were spoken to and we are cooperating (with the investigation).”

Litchfield Police were not the only people contacted, Fank said, adding “there were multiple interviews going on at the law enforcement center.”

Fank said there was nothing that led him to believe that his office was being investigated. The chief said FBI agents showed up at the law enforcement center Wednesday and asked him for assistance in setting up interviews with some of his officers.

Asked how many officers were interviewed, Fank said, “several.” He could not be more specific, he said, because “there may be officers they didn’t ask me about” who agents did talk to. Agents did not interview Fank, he said.

“We work directly with a lot of different aspects of life in the county,” Fank said in explaining why Litchfield officers may have been interviewed in as part of an investigation of a county office or individual.

“It’s a lot of vague information; that’s they way they keep it is a vague investigation,” Fank said. “I don’t know specifically what they’re looking into. They’re doing the investigation; we’re cooperating.”

Paul McCabe, communications director for the FBI’s Minneapolis office, said in a brief interview Monday afternoon that the agency “does not confirm or deny” investigations. He said such investigations would become public information upon filing of documents with the courts.

Disappointing article due to lack of information. But on the other hand, I think this investigation is long overdue.

I agree. I feel that this investigation is long over due. I have been saying for years that someone needs to report this county to internal affairs! I have heard so many things that are corrupt in Meeker County from people who worked for Meeker County all the way up to people who were improtant figures!

I had a convicted child molester living in my apartment building, I have two kids and no one notified me! There was shooting in a home recently and I have heard crack pipes were found in the home! WHY THE HELL DID MEEKER COUNTY GIVE THAT MOTHER HER CHILDREN AND ALLOW them to be in that home after a person was shot by a CRACK HEAD!!!!!!!! DOES THAT KID NEED TO DIE from another idiot shooting off a gun before they do anything????

Fellow Citizens there is corruption in law enforcement it is just that we as a society are expected to trust our community leaders so it is hard to swallow when it happens in our small town. This town has many good people in it! Don't fear truth will come out and things will change now that the FBI is here investigating. There are those in this town who want to do right and make a difference. They just are not heard and are swept under the rug....

A few months ago I wrote a letter asking for more comprehensive community involvement programs that would pertain to community policing. We have in Meeker County a huge problem with methamphetamines! Why is there not any programs aimed at getting the community involved with fighting our problem?????????? Ive asked for a RED RIBBON week like the rest of our nation ...yet nothing.....I've asked for educational and recognition programs and nothing happens...why is that. Where we have kids using meth there is serious problem!

People I try to talk to ignor my input, and these are people who should care about the quality of this town! Putting drug addicts in jail is not the answer! We need drug courts and treatment programs and education programs, and community policing education programs!!!!

Whoohooo, I am soooo excited. Let's hope they clean up the dirt!!! They need to go from the Sheriff's department, to the County Attorney's Office to the Child Support Office. Let the good people of Meeker County win!!! This was a long time coming, but much needed. Now maybe people won't think they can get away with anything just because of who they are!!! You go FBI, get em' and get em' all!!!

Well, now wait a gosh darn minute... Who are they investigating??? I believe this has something to do with the officer who got into the wrong email account? SOOOO, how did you get to attorney to child support?? Hey I am not bashing what you said... (As prior comments I have made on this website have been commented on!) So don't go all crazy on me before I have said my peace... I have been a single mother for going on 21 years, and the county child support did "NOTHING" for me... If I wanted something done, I had to contact them, and then they would advise me not to make the choice I made.... GO FIGURE.. Needless to say "God Rest His Soul, Wayne Brix!" He was a "HELL" of a mentor for me and my son to fight for my son's rights. But funny when my son was "abused" (with photos taken by police) they would do nothing more then talk to the "X"... Well DUH what good did that do? I learned you are better off calling the State, or better off yet ask workers for the # for advocates for Child Support. I am sorry to say I no longer have the number or I would post it here. But if you are really interested email me @ bwshoutz@xtratyme.com and I will get the number for you from someone else who has it.
Best of luck in Child Support issues in Meeker, I have been told this is the worst county in MN... I am both for and against the mother and father.. Go figure that one out, but it depends on the situation. I know parents on both ends of the scale and have helped them both out... Again this FBI situation most likely doesn't have anything to deal with Support, but I agree I would love to see it investigated....

Back to page top

What! The sheriffs department is corrupt?

Obviously. The interesting thing about this article is what is said and what is not said. Police Chief Fank was by far the most talkative, so this leads me to believe it is the Sheriffs Department and not the Litchfield Police who are being investigated.

Many of Chief Fanks officers were formerly with the Sheriffs department. This is probably why they were questioned.

Possibilities that come to mind are, embezzlement, fraud, evidence tampering, just to name a few. Yes, the Federalis are here and someone is about to get nailed. The FBI doesn't play games. It would be nice to cleanse all the leadership from all county offices. Corruption is rampant, and egos are huge. New blood is needed and needed now.

If nothing else it makes me smile to watch the elite be thrown into the frying pan. Another nice point is that they will be shown no mercy because the case will not be tried by a friendly local judge. It will be tried in Federal Court where no favors will be given.

Back to page top

First I would like to say I am proud of the Independent Review. It wasn't so many years ago that the closest place to get information on a news story like this would have been the West Central Tribune. It looks like we finally have a paper that is not a pawn of the local government. Thanks for that.

Now perhaps this is the wrong thread to continue the Child Support conversation in, but I have a couple of comments to make. I pay child support through Meeker county. I have never in my life been treated with such disrespect.

The staff there are not there to help you, they are there to make your life a living hell. My ex who receives the child support has also had the same experiences on her end. We are to the point of dropping all child support on the books because of how improffesional and arrogant the staff there are. I think a full fledged investigation should be launched into all the case files and case workers in that office. I can think of multiple points of misconduct in my own dealings with them.

"johndoe" I totally agree with you! Meeker County child support is corrupt, disrespectful, and think they are above the law. There should be a support group for those having to bear the burden of being involved with Meeker County. A dear friend of mine has gone through 5 years of hell because of this county. (And that's putting it lightly.) I hope to God that the FBI gets to the root of this corruption and all those working for the county get blown out of the water and shown for who they really are- criminals.

I fear the dirt runs deeper than the FBI will ever know. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone, it's just that what goes on in Meeker County normally only happens in the movies!!!

Threats, lies, use of intimidation and trying to use payoffs are just a few that I have personally witnessed! All this and I have never worked for Meeker County! Apparently they didn't like my diggin up dirt!!

At least now people have opened their eyes and ears to the dirt in this community! No longer should we sit back and watch the abuse that most of us have witnessed over the years.

I can't wait to see how this all plays out! I have been waiting for this for much too long!!!

The FBI was all over every building in Meeker County. Trust me, Social Services is part of the issue there, among others. They all work together to frame people and let the real criminals go when they know the friendly judge. If the FBI had that many agents that we KNEW of, there were even more that were not made public.
I'm with Lori on this one; the illegal activity happening there is unbelieveable and many, many people are going to be very shocked over what will come out after this investigation.

I think the investigation is probably limited to the Sheriffs department, and possibly the prosecuting attorneys also. Who knows though? There is just too little information as of yet to assume anything.

I highly doubt that Social Services is being investigated because they have basically free reign to intimidate, abuse and degrade anyone they deal with, even in the eyes of the law. That's the problem, they are not regulated enough by the state of MN, who is technically their overseer.

EVER SINCE THE DAWN OF CIVILIZATION, it has been recognized that anyone put in a position of exercising communal, collective, or public power and commanding public obedience is tempted to use public office for personal gain and advantage. Perhaps it is asking too much of mere mortals to put aside personal ambition and prejudice and ignore all group and peer pressures to rule in a completely disinterested manner. Deviant conduct has been expected and fairly accurately recorded by historians brave enough to write about Chinese rulers, Hebrew kings, and Roman emperors. Indeed, the most wicked who wallowed in perversion and depravity even welcomed the idea that their evil deeds would be known forever and showed no shame or remorse

Do you think that those employees and citizens were trying to tell us something all those years??? My thought is YES, they were. The issues were raised and no one seemed to listen or care and wrote it off as disgruntled employees. The cop that may suspect something is wrong or corrupt also runs the risk of losing their job or being singled out if they are wrong or dont have proof. It is partially our own fault, we (the citizens) kept electing the same person over and over.....It is unfair to blame all the other cops. Blame the person(s) truly at fault.

Clueless in Litchfield.

All of you illiterate fools complaining about child support in Meeker County really need to take up another hobby. It seems to be the same people, based on some of the user names on earlier posts, that use any reason they can to bring up the Meeker County child
support office because they feel they have been wronged. No one in that department caused you to need child support I believe that one is all on you.

And as far as being corrupt, the child support office as well as other county offices are monitored and audited by the state to make sure they are in compliance with all laws, rules and regulations. So if there is corruption it would have to run deeper than just the county level.
Believe it or not the people in that office are not there just to make your life miserable, you apparently don't need any help with that.

They are not public officials they are not elected they are hired employees. Trust me these people have families and lives just like you and I am pretty sure that they don't wake up each day looking for ways to screw you over, in fact their lives would be much better off having never had the pleasure of dealing with people like you

Back to page top

I beg to differ. First of all, These people are hardly illiterate, nor is this hardly a "hobby" for us to have to accept that there is a group of people working for the pubilc that are this corrupt and awful.
Hundreds of people that have had to deal with this county, whether child support or another branch, have been mistreated terribly. There is not someone that is monitoring the officces there on a regular basis. If there was, many of the things that occur there would not be happening still.
I know that the county works together with the child support offices to frame people and make their lives miserable. I've seen it happen for the past 5 years. Not to mention, these people could have had the "awful citizens" out of their lives, but the county continues to hurt and harass them even when child support is not an issue any longer.
I think as more information comes to light during and after the FBI's investigation you will begin to see what terrible things have happened to very average, trusting individuals.

You say you know the county works with child support to frame people. Do you realize how ridiculously stupid that sounds? You honestly believe there are that many corrupt people to carry out this conspiracy you dreamed up. You are obviously delusional and schizophrenic.

When it comes to the state monitoring the child support offices I believe there are annual state audits of all the child support offices throughout the state.

As far as law enforcement I don't know what sort of checks and balances there is but I do know anyone in law enforcement has a ton of paperwork they have to do everyday to ensure their public trust is not compromised.

I do agree corruption can happen anywhere but not on the scale you believe it is in this county. This is only an investigation which may or may not lead to charges.

I'm sure if there are no charges filed you will probably say the FBI is in on it to or that the so called corrupt people in the county did a good job of covering up.

We are not delusional or schizophrenic! Maybe you are right on certain points, I am pretty sure they are not investigating the Social Service dept, but isn't this space on this website for people to talk about what they are feeling and thinking? Well what governs us to be wrong and you to be right??? We are just average Joe's who don't agree with how our cases were handled.
While I agree also that the Social Services are monitored by the State each year, please remember they don't investigate EVERY case, just a few in each area. So what about the ones that aren't checked? Those are the ones that slide through the cracks.

First of all Bagger.Freedom of speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship liberal democracies. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under international law through numerous human rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 . Pull you head from your but. Second of all. Justice in Meeker County , or justice for personal reasons. Here is a story that was emailed to me along with 45 other emails about Meeker county. A man works construction for many years. One day he has a bobcat run his leg over. He breaks it in 5 places. He has pins placed in his leg. He has a child support order in Meeker county. He walks in after rehab to child support. Wants to talk to his case worker on lowering his child support. They first of all tell him to come back Friday. He is unable to because his ride cant. He does the wrong thing and swears at them. They tell him to get a lawyer and pay for court fees. The man does this. He goes to court tells his story to the magistrate. 30 days later he gets a decision . Instead of lowering it they double it. So now the man cant pay his child support. So now the county takes his drivers license away. He gets busted going to rehab. So now he is a criminal. The honorable judge fines him and tells him to take the bus to rehab. Well I don't know Eden valley well but iam sure there are no busses running from there. He loses his workers comp cause he cant rehab. Now this person walks with a limp.THAT'S JUSTICE!!!!!! He did get a settlement from this but had to give most of it to child support. Tell me this bagger does child support get a percent of what they collect? Is this true the same magistrate has been with this county for years? Well I will give you the answer yes and yes. I guess this is Meeker county justice.

ps This man now walks with a cane and the honorable judge a magistrate rule the roost but no corruption here

And your story brought tears to my eyes--not only because it reads as a carbon copy of my friend's story (so close, it's scary), but also because now that man will suffer for the rest of his life at the cost of this horrid county. I pray every day that justice will be brought to these people so no other citizen has to endure this pain.

This FBI investigation is...

Back to page top

This FBI investigation is NOT about social service and/or the child support office. Were they talked to?? Probably, but it was most likely due to connections to another county agency.

Start a separate blog if you guys want to debate social services.

Sorry for being blunt, but the topic mutated into something completely different. Lets stay on track!

I just hope something good comes out of this investigation. I like alot of people wish it was about child support and the lovely people in social services but im sure its not. The people in meeker county that have been wronged by your meeker couty officals i am one of you for the people that havent been hope you never are. I am not going to get my hopes up we can hope and wonder all we want but in reality all we can do is wait.
