Fourteen Meeker County 4-H’ers participated in the regional Dairy Bowl Contest March 1 in Foley. Two senior teams and one junior team competed against other teams from across the state.

One of the senior teams and the junior team will advance to the State Dairy Bowl Competition April 19 at Foley High School.

Senior team members include: Isaac Salfer of Dassel, Lucas Salfer of Dassel, Simon Kern of Watkins, Alan Barka of Litchfield, Anne Gathje of Richmond, Joe Gathje of Richmond, Matt Frenchick of Paynesville, and Max Johnson of Grove City.

Junior Team members were Anne Gathje of Richmond, James Gathje of Richmond, Tyler Eblen of Belgrade, Jon Frenchick of Paynesville, Isaac Tintes of Watkins, and Josiah Tintes of Watkins.
All three teams were coached by Jim Salfer and Judy Barka.

Dairy Bowl is a “quiz bowl” competition where all questions deal with dairy topics. Teams of four to six members compete with each other in giving oral answers to questions posed by a moderator. Questions are on topics such as nutrition, reproduction, milk quality, and judging. Teams receive points for correct answers and may lose points for incorrect answers. The team with the highest final score is the winner. The contest is organized on a double elimination basis with winning teams advancing into further rounds until a champion team is selected.
