Back to page topI'm neither a Glen Mason apologist or basher – I just think the school could get a lot more bang for its buck – but I'm wondering what you think of the Minnesota Gophers getting into a bowl game.
Is a 6-6 team that finished 3-5 in Big Ten games worthy of a bowl game?
Do you care?
Watching the Gophers, or any team for that matter, play in the Insight Bowl or the Alamo Bowl doesn't do much for me.
This is old....but, here are...
Back to page topThis is old....but, here are three reasons for having Insight-type bowls.
A. The U gets 1.2 million dollars.
B. It is another month of practice for the returning players for next year. In discussions with Gopher players the team just started preparing for Texas Tech Friday. Since Iowa the team has been working on next season i.e. Tony Mortenson and Adam Weber are trying to figure out who succeeds Cupito.
C. At 3-6 this team had zero confidence. Right now they feel pretty good after winning three straight. If they finish 7-6 that's momentum for next year. It's another game to prove to the nay-sayers and themselves how good they can be.

Back to page top"Lesser" bowls are not as interesting to me. Considering the large size of the U of M, it would be nice if something could be done to improve the team.
I remember being on the U of M campus during the awkward period after the dome was built, but before Memorial Stadium was torn down. It sat empty for a while. I remember walking by and thinking how cool it was. If I remember correctly, the field was dug down into the ground.

Is it:
A) Very good. I like it a lot/
B) So so. I've seen a lot better.
C) Not so hot. It's not worth my time.
D) The worst you've seed. Time for a new sports editor.

It's not looking good for...
Back to page topIt's not looking good for the Twins' chances of adding a quality pitcher or hitter through free agency.
With the signings of Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Lee, Vicente Padilla, Frank Thomas, Gary Matthews Jr., Adam Eaton, J.D. Drew and other big name free agents, it seems like the Twins have been priced out of even mid-level free agents.
Should the Twins even consider spending 8 million dollars on a third or fourth starter (Padilla or Eaton)?
How about 6 million a year on an average big league set up man (Denys Baez)?
And what does this mean for future Twins free agents? If Padilla gets 11 million per season in Texas, what will Johan Santana's value be? 20 million? 25 million?
How about Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau? They will both command over 10 million per season once they hit the free agent market.
That's a scary thought for Twins fans and baseball in general.
Well, we can all relax now....
Back to page topWell, we can all relax now. The Twins have picked up all the players we need: a first basemen (Ken Harvey); a third baseman (Jeff Cirillo); a starting pitcher--oh wait, we didn't get one of those.
Let's hope players like Lew Ford, Phil Nevin, Rondell White and Carlos Silva will pull us through the playoffs because the Twins just can't compete in the free-agent market.
It's time baseball gets a salary cap so emphasis is placed on developing new talented players and not trading around over-paid, over-hyped athletes simply because there's no one else to pick from. While the luxury tax might be a nice thought, it's keeping no one from upping their salaries.
Perhaps my nostalgia for a salary cap comes from a greater desire to see salaries drop. Maybe I'm wishing that players like Mauer and Morneau would feel so loyal to their teams they'd be willing to take pay cuts. In that case, maybe salaries would come back to earth.
Luckily for us we won't have...
Back to page topLuckily for us we won't have to put up watching poor at-bats from Phil Nevin. He won't be back. Ken Harvey has about a 5 percent chance of making the roster. It makes our offseason so far look even more bleek.
I heard Terry Ryan the other day say the Twins are looking at about 10-12 pitchers right now. Expect them to sign someone like a Steve Traschel or someone that will win 10-12 games but will bring veteran leadership.
About salaries, you are absolutely right. It is out of control, and almost to the point where it is ruining sports. This offseason really was the final point for me. Gil Meche at 11 million a year? Santana only makes 12. How does a guy like Padilla in Texas get a huge contract when he won 13 games last year (I believe)? It makes Silva at 4.5 million look like a steal (now I sound like Sid).
It's hard for me to say that Mauer and Morneau owe us a cut. Why just them? Because they are young and are cornerstones of the program? I do believe Joe will stay in Minnesota unless the Twins are unfair, which they won't be. Morneau might be tougher to hold down because he has no loyalties to MN. I could see him last one more contract extension and then take the big money 5 years down the road.
When does spring training start? Any chance Matt sends me down there to cover it for the papers?
Kristin and Lyle, you'll be...
Back to page topKristin and Lyle, you'll be happy to hear this great news.
Matthew LeCroy has signed a minor league deal with the club and has been invited to spring training. LeCroy, 31, batted .239 with two homers and nine RBI in 39 games with Washington last year after spending the six previous seasons with the Twins. He'll make $500,000 if he makes the team.
The Twins are currently searching all Goodwills and Savers for LeCroy jerseries. The problem is with Rondell White wearing 24, the "2" will have to be turned into an "8" with trainer's tape.
Perhaps, we are looking at...
Back to page topPerhaps, we are looking at this from the wrong side of the tracks. Maybe the Twins are just looking to inject a little more fun into spring training this February. Since the departure of the 2002 Twins-with the exception of Michael Cuddyer, Tori Hunter, Juan Rincon and Johann Santana-the Twins have lost a bit of that "party" attitude famous in the clubhouse. It could be that the invitation to LeCroy is aimed at loosening up some of the Twins more reserved athletes.
I'm pretty sure by the end of spring training, however, Terry Ryan and Ron Gardenhire will remember that Twins fans care more about what happens on the field than in the clubhouse. And for that, I'm not sure the M&M boys need any lessons from LeCroy.
It’s going to be an...
Back to page topIt’s going to be an expensive offseason for the Minnesota Twins.
Minnesota could easily spend $13 million in 2007 just to sign arbitration-eligible sluggers Justin Morneau, Joe Mauer and Michael Cuddyer.
That number will be significantly higher if the Twins avoid arbitration with any of the three and sign long-term deals.
Minnesota would be wise to lock up at least two of their sluggers to three- or four-year deals, much like they did with Johan Santana in 2004.
The Twins inked the two-time Cy Young Award winner to a four-year, $40-million contract, which at the time was the richest deal in franchise history.
Just this offseason pitchers like Vicente Padilla, Adam Eaton, Jeff Suppan and Ted Lilly have signed deals worth about $10 million per season.
Another Cy Young Award winning left-hander, Barry Zito, signed a $126-million, seven-year deal with San Francisco.
Terry Ryan says he doesn’t believe in free agency. If that’s the case, he better not let any of his top talent make it that far.
I will be curious to see...
Back to page topI will be curious to see what Mauer does once he hits free agency. He spoke to a small group of people in Willmar last year and said that he only planned to play for MN. He said that if he couldn't play here, he would go back to college.
I agree in a salary cap. It is ridiculous to see what most of the "big names" get paid. As Kristin said, the emphasis should be on development, not higher salaries.
There are too many bowls,...
Back to page topThere are too many bowls, period. But that's not really my argument.
I'm just tired of hearing how the Gophers are that much better off with Mason when they haven't even played in a New Year's Day bowl game during his tenure.
Name me another Big Ten school that hasn't at least done that once in the last 10-15 years? Indiana hasn't. Illinois, maybe?
If we were to rank the conference football teams based on their success the last 10 years, Illinois and Indiana are the only teams I'd put below the Gophs.
That's not acceptable in my book. It's not something I'd brag about and it's certainly not worth a big fat contract extension for Mason.
Who's to blame? The players...
Back to page topWho's to blame? The players or the coach?
After the Vikings went into Seattle and clubbed the defending NFC champs at their house, they were 4-2 and looked like a playoff team. They had beaten Washington, Carolina and Detroit at that point and lost to Chicago and Buffalo.
Nine weeks later, Minnesota's won two of its last nine games and seems to have to clue how to jump start its struggling offense.
Is it the system? Is it the quarterback? Is it those lousy receivers? Is it Childress?
It's probably a combination, but somebody needs to step up and take responsibility. You can't go to Lambeau, record 3 first downs against a suspect Packers defense and blame it solely on penalties.
It looks like the Gophers...
Back to page topIt looks like the Gophers took a 180 from their approach to hiring a head football coach. Going after a big name basketball coach is a bold move by the Gophers, showing Joel Maturi is dedicated to improving the team. But is Tubby Smith the answer?
I'm not sure. What do you think? Does hiring a big name (with impressive NCAA experience) automatically bring in better recruits?
I think the Gophers needed a...
Back to page topI think the Gophers needed a big name to re-establish the program, to generate excitement among potential recruits and fans. Hiring a no-name at this point would have been a mistake. The U needs a jump start both for recruiting and to bring the fans back to Williams arena.
There have been too many seasons of disappointment. At least the Gophers football program had been to a few bowl games in the past few seasons. The men's basketball team did almost nothing under Dan Monson, plummeting off the radar screen of many a recruit ... and the fans. With such an abysmal showing during the Monson era, a big name is the only thing that can resurrect this program.
SCAM ALERT!!! Today i...
Back to page topSCAM ALERT!!! Today i was nearly scammed but i won. I got home today and a construction company i think there called Hall Construction showed up saying they had asphalt to get rid of and would put it down in my driveway for only the cost of the material wich they told me would be 18 dollars a yard. I asked how many yards i would be getting but he told me however much was left on the truck. I know about trucks and how much they can haul as i drove one before myself. This truck that showed up full would have been arround 5 yards. So i decided sure i had 100 bucks i could use to help them and for me to get a driveway done. Sounded too good i was worried as they did the work. Again asking and getting the same answer. So i figured it would not be bad. They did the job and the dump truck was listed as i think Platinum somthin or else from texas. So they finished a nice driveway tonight and looks great. The guy came back later with no invoice or written bill or anything stating there was 87 yards down. Huh? Thats 1500 bucks. I know that truck would never haul 87 yards and never 1500 bucks worth of material. He told me it was not measured as cubic yards but i know it should be as anything in a dump truck like that is cubic yards sand, gravel, rocks, black dirt, even garbage. He told me it was measured as squares like carpet. I didnt belive him but told him there is no way i could afford the 1500 he wanted. He asked what i could and i said i had 200 availible but he said he didnt want to take all my money. He started to ask when i could have it but i just outright told him i could not afford that much. If i would have been told ahead of time i would have not done it but since i wasnt i figured things would be square and right. I even talked to a friend who told me yep that truck would hold 5 yards at the most. So when i told the guy i couldnt afford it and was just gonna offer they come dig it out he stormed off and said keep the job.
I am posting this in hopes others can see it and not get scammed by these people. I dont know where they came from the Hall trucks say in the cities but everyone had a southern accent. I know they asked all over my neighborhood. I think they are just goin arround doin this because if they were doing roads or any sizable jobs they would have much larger equipment than they do. All they have is small stuff only usable for small jobs like driveways.
BEWARE PEOPLE DONT LET THE SCAMMERS SCAM YOU LETS SCAM THEM BACK.
