Who would be your vote for a Litchfield Hall of Fame?
January 17, 2007 - 5:53pm — Kristin Holtz
At the end of every year, there always seems to be a lot of talk about persons of the year, athletes of the year, politicians of the year, even turkeys of the year. Just recently, the National Baseball Hall of Fame released its 2007 inductees (Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken), and it got me wondering if Litchfield had a Hall of Fame, who would you include in its gloried halls? Would you cast your vote for someone famous, perhaps a star athlete or politician who put Litchfield on the map? Or would you vote for the neighbor down the street who has lived her whole life here helping others? As a non-Litchfield native, I'm curious who you think is most deserving of a place in a Litchfield Hall of Fame.

Back to page topI think that Danny & Eddie Estrada should have some part in the sports hall of fame I i think that they have put Litchfield on the map. In high school they were excellent football players as well as baseball. I think that they have been very active with The Blues and I think that they have achieved alot through the years. You can go almost anywhere in rural MN and ask any hometown baseball player if they have ever heard of the Estrada Twins and generally 80% of them do, I believe that, thats an accomplishment in itself.

Back to page topI agree with PR that the Estradas should definitely be in the Litchfield Sports Hall of Fame.
As far as things other than sports, some people that come to mind are:
Don & Sonja Nelson, they host so many school children each year and go to classrooms in the metro area to teach young children about farm life. Their farm is well known and kids all over the state remember the fun they had at the Nelson Farm.
Doctor Leitch, Doctor Allison, Doctor Schnell
Bernie Aaker
Bob Sparboe

I would look back to the start of Litchfield. Without the founding citizens there would be no town to have a Hall of Fame for. Mayor Bhranham, Mayor Anderson, Doctor Castel, Mr. Howard, Mr. Ness, and so many more would make great candidates. Take a stroll through the Cemetaries, these are our Halls of Fame. Without all of these people we would not be a city nor would we be a nation. They came to build a dream and it still stands.
Now on a lighter side I vote for Dean Urdahl for the Baseball Hall of Fame. From little lot by SA to the Civic Arena Fields, over 50 years and still going strong. He can write, he can hit and he sure can run.

Back to page topGrowing up in Litchfield and playing hockey from Mites through High School I am partial to The Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Hockey Team. Dean Helstrom ('84-'85) stands out to me as one of the best to hit the ice for LDC. Not only a star on the ice, but a classic character for young players to look up to. These were the days when the Ice Arena was the biggest attraction in Central Minnesota when Litchfield and Willmar would get together on a Saturday afternoon. The place was packed and extra Police officers had to regulate...Classic! Not to mention Mike Sundin and Mark Vatenstal for their outstanding leadership through these years.

Back to page topoh yes what a good choice it is. It is what they have done that makes them stand out! Not that it was anything to be proud of! Honorable? Thats just a title that comes with the job! I too believe this is correct to place them in the hall of fame. Too bad it will not be for the reasons most would want to be voted for!
