The Compact: Could you go a year without anything new?

Filed under:

The business section of today's (Jan. 8) Minneapolis Star Tribune poses this interesting question in its article about Minnesotans signing the Compact.

Begun in San Francisco, the Compact encourages people to go one year without buying anything new. The Tribune calls in a growing social movement and poses some interesting questions about our commercialized lifestyles. (See the Tribune's article, "A pledge to go a year without buying anything new," at www.startribune.com/business/13513951.html.)

I've heard of the Compact before and have to admit I thought the people were crazy. While a few essentials - food, underwear, toiletries - are permitted, it's hard to imagine living a year without big box store shopping. While I admire those willing to try it and believe everyone can take away from the idea important lessons on living more simply, I don't think I'd be interested in signing the Compact. Though I don't buy much stuff now, I like to know that I can.

What do you think about the Compact? Would you be willing to give it a try - why or why not?

We should all stop and think...

Back to page top

We should all stop and think how fortunate we are to even contimplate this decision. For many people it is not a choice. I personally would not sign a compact. It is not really in the best intrest of the world. If everyone stopped buying there would be no jobs and then it would not be a choice but a requirement for most. At that point it would not eb luxuries we are talking about but food, housing, helth care etc. You could sign a compact against wanton consumption. Wanton consumption is not good for the earth. Most of us could do a better job there. Just start with bottled water. Better water comes right out of your faucet and is pretty cheap and earth friendly. Or just not printing every little thing off your computer. Don't buy a piece of clothing and then wear it once just to throw it away insted of donating it to a clothing drive.
Put on your thinking cap and open your eyes.
