With the holiday season right around the corner, local churches, schools and organizations are hosting a variety of holiday events next month to get everyone in the spirit of the season.

Master Gardeners offer youth chance learn about gardening

For the past few years, the Meeker County Master Gardeners have been working with local youth on the Jr. Master Gardener Program.

This program is an excellent opportunity for youth to learn more about nature and how food is grown. These skills and lessons will help them relate to their future science classes and provide life lessons well into the future.


Summer program guide will be insert in Advertiser

The 2008 Community Education Summer Program Guide will be an insert in this weekend’s Meeker County Advertiser.

Registration for summer activities will begin online at 6 p.m. Sunday. Visit www.litchfield.k12.mn.us. You can set-up an account prior to Sunday's registration. The office will also take registrations by mail, phone, fax or e-mail.


Prom goers will walk the red carpet

Litchfield High School juniors and seniors will enjoy a “Night on the Red Carpet” Saturday at Prom 2008. This year’s Prom will be held in the Great Room at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn.

The grand march will be at 4 p.m. in the Litchfield High School gymnasium. Doors open at 3 p.m. with a door charge of $2 adults and $1 students.


Free or low-cost electronic recycling available Saturday

Salisbury Electronic Recycling will offer a household electronic recycling pickup from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Tiremaxx on U.S. Highway 12 East in Litchfield. (Note the change in location.)

Many electronic items will be accepted free, including computers and computer parts such as keyboards and mice, DVD and VHS players and audio equipment. Televisions up to 40 inches, microwaves and computer monitors will be accepted for a $5 fee. Commercial items also will be accepted Saturday, or businesses can call to schedule a pickup at their locations.


Spring luncheon to feature music, inspirational speaker

A women’s spring luncheon, featuring Debbie Mayer with music by The Prairie Fiddlers, will be held at Litchfield Assembly of God Church on May 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a catered lunch, music and inspiration.

Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at Rennie’s China Closet and Arts or by calling Donna Hansen (320) 593-7651 or JoAnn Deviney (320) 693-2425, 12 years and older, reservations required.

Mayer lost her three daughters in a car accident four years ago, while they were driving to their brother’s wedding in Willmar.


Turn off TV, tune into activities

Turn off the television and computer, and turn on your imagination next week.

Litchfield Community Education will sponsor the third annual Turn Off the TV/Screen Week, April 21-26. Stop by the Community Education Office to pick up a free kit with signs to put over the screens in your house, ideas for non-screen activities and facts and figures about the American TV habit.


Wall remembers 35W bridge collapse

From the windows of the Twin Cities Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, staff, volunteers and students witnessed the I-35W Bridge collapse Aug. 1, 2007. It happened just yards away from the chapter’s Minneapolis building.

The Red Cross’ response was instant. Minutes after the bridge fell the Red Cross was on the scene.


Rainbow Singers seek women to join group

Rainbow Singers are looking for women to join their group.

The first practice will be at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Emmaus Chapel, 200 Holcombe Ave. N., Litchfield.
